BERG RIVER DAM
DAMS
The construction of a 1000m long 65m high rockfill dam which consisted of 3.4million cubic meters of rockfill and filter layers. The inside slope was controlled with in-situ kerbs which were covered by 40 000sqm concrete face slab as liner on the inside of the dam. The 63m high concrete intake tower (20 000 cubic meters of concrete) is linked to the dam wall with a 3 span – 120m access bridge. The 140m long, 5.5m dia concrete conduit acted as temporary deviation during the construction of the wall but forms part of the final outlet structure between the intake tower and the plunge-pool. The spillway and deflector bucket was constructed by using 20 000 cubic meters of concrete and also end in the plunge-pool, next to the outlet structure. The works also included 50 000m of consolidation grouting and 25 000m of curtain grouting as well as all the hydro-mechanical installations and Dam monitoring instrumentation.
