The project included the turnkey design and construct contract for the new greenfields 7,5 million passengers per day Durban International Airport, including the cargo handling terminal and trade port. The project comprised of a 3,7 km runway, parallel and cross taxiways, aircraft parking aprons, 6 million cubic meters of earthworks and all civil infrastructure required for a new airport. The facilities included a 100 000sqm terminal building, multi storey car park, 5 storey office block, a crash fire and rescue building, maintenance workshops, a cargo terminal, fuel farm and associated hydrant system. The contract included all specialist packages associated with an airport including a baggage handling system, 14 aerobridges, 23 IT subsystems, airfield ground lighting, instrument landing systems and cargo handling equipment. The project was completed in 31 months from commencement to the end of trial operations. Although the project was undertaken as a joint venture – WBHO’s participation was 38,5% – WBHO led the EPC Joint Venture as well as the joint ventures for the Building Works and the Civil Works.
