BULK EARTHWORKS
In November 2011, Eskom awarded WBHO the Contract for the Construction of the Kusile Combustion Storage Facility and two Ash Dam Dirty Dams. The Ash Storage Facility covers a footprint area of 1 080 900sqm. The system composes of five layers of geo-synthetic product, two layers of 2mm double textured HDPE geomembranes, two layers A8 bidim and one layer GCL. Two layers of natural materials completed the system. One layer of a 100mm washed river sand and 300mm of a graded non-angular G5. A network of small diameter pipes was installed in the G5 layer as well as 3 000m of large diameter pipelines (2.4m and 2,7m) were installed. A 8 000m large diameter U-shaped clean water drain was also constructed. The Ash Dam Dirty Dams had two ADDD’s, 73 000sqm each, constructed . These dams had two HDPE liners, A8 bidim and a caspated layer. Each dam had a 22 000sqm reinforced concrete covering. The Construction of the Coal Stock Yard was added to the Contract as a modification and consisted of; 300 000sqm of 275mm thick reinforced concrete, designed with 1 348 tons of reinforcing on top of graded G5 layer and two 1.5mm mono textured HDPE liner.
