CAPE TOWN CONTAINER BERTH DEEPENING & QUAY REFURBISHMENT
MARINE WORKS
The Ben Schoeman dock, berths 601 to 604, had to be upgraded to accommodate Post Panamax container vessels. WBHO was the lead partner in the joint venture that undertook this mega marine project for Transnet. The existing quay wall had to be widened by approximately 11 metres over a distance of 1 050 metres. We had to install bored reinforced concrete, 900/1 400mm diameter, piles in the basin which supported a composite precast, cast-in-situ and reinforced concrete deck. The entire basin had to be dredged to a depth of 16m and we installed scour protection for the full length of berths 601 to 604. We had to install a new anchor beam and rock anchors to stabilise the existing quay wall from berth 602 to 604. All associated landside work, including all the quay furniture, was also part of the scope. This project was successfully completed on time in an operational port.
