DESCRIPTION
A feature of this project was the excavation and protection of rock cuttings over a 10km length of mountainous terrain. Blasting of rock adjacent to the existing road was required and great importance was attached to the method of controlling this blasting to ensure the safety of the public and a minimum of disruption to the continuity of traffic flow. Stability of two large cuttings was achieved by installation of rock nails designed to prevent slippage or uncontrolled rock falls.Construction Involved the following: The rehabilitation & upgrading of 19.15km of the Mbabane / Ngwenya Road, (MR3) from single to dual carriageway & 46.8km of service roads. 7 No grade separation interchanges with bridges, 3000 m culverts, 6000m2 Reinforced Earth,1 No road-over-pass, 8 No Footbridges over the dual carriageway, 28 000m3 Concrete, 4 No Retaining Walls with total length of 112km,1 500 000m3 of Earthworks, 4 No cattle creeps in Reinforced Concrete, 30 000m3 Premix, 275 000m3 Selected Sub-grade, 95 000m3 Crushed Stone Base, 97 000m3 Ducting, 8 000m3 Sub-surface Drains.
